Enterprise and Self Employment Programme Prospectus

The following is a brief explanation of the Enterprise and Self-Employment course content. The course is modular and builds as the timetable progresses. You will receive handouts and other information to put into your course file each time you attend a session.

Overview of Self-Employment
Introduction session with a brief overview of what it means to be selfemployed. This is followed by a business quiz ("The BIZ QUIZ") - a fun activity designed to increase your awareness of the fundamentals of self employment. It is also a good opportunity to get to know the other clients on the course.

Business Link
Ian Race - Black Country Enterprise - An overview of how his organisation can help you.

Premises
This session gives you information and an insight into the implications and requirements of renting or leasing premises for your business. It also looks into using your home as a place of work.

Finance
Anna Goodwin Accountant - A look at the financial rights and responsibilities of self-employed people.

Personal Development – 2 sessions
Covers aspects of personal development that will help you in business, such as confidence, assertive behaviours and language, aspects of personal preference and how we are different from each other and how we might negotiate more effectively.

Market Research
This session covers the reasons for carrying out Market Research and the iimportance of it to your business. Various methods of Market Research are explored.

NI and TAX
This session is run by Irene Baines - Training Officer from HMRC, Walsall Office and covers all aspects of National Insurance and TAX for your business. It is also an opportunity to ask direct questions as to your circumstances regarding your Tax and Nl within your business.

Cashflow Forecast
Interactive session to show how finance such as cashflow fits into your business plan.  (Takes the fear out of cashflow forecasting!)

Insurance
John Tew - Senior Partner in a large Insurance firm - can answer direct questions about your insurance concerns and requirements.

Trading Standards
Trading Standards Officers come in to talk about all aspects of trading standards and how it affects your business.

VAT
Mark Adams - VAT Inspector - talks about all aspects of VAT and how it appears in your business plan.

Time Management
Video Arts DVD and workshop followed by discussion on how things are progressing and general comments and feedback.

Customer Relations
Video Arts DVD and workshop

Law
Dix Wilton - Senior Partner in a large firm of solicitors gives a talk and a question and answer session on the law as regards to running a business. This is an invaluable opportunity to get your questions answered free by an expert in business law.

Marketing
This is a partner session to Market Research.  The session aims to introduce you to the principles of marketing and define its crucial role in doing good business.  Also how to take the first steps in good marketing practice so that it impacts on your business in a quick and positive way.

Health & Safety and First Aid Day
External Trainers Central Birmingham Ambulance Service. - training to basic level in Health & Safety and First Aid. Both of these sessions are certified. Please note:- this is a practical session and will involve some work at floor level.

Wages/PAYE
This session deals with all information needed to pay any employees or casual labour you may have in your business.

Agreements and Contracts
Looks at aspects of any agreements or contracts you may need to enter into if you are involved with renting property etc.

Communication
About communication from both clients and business point of view.

Presentation Skills and Presenting your Pitch
At times we all have to present ourselves and our thoughts and ideas.  In business, opportunities to do this are sometimes rare.  This session shows how to put your business idea over in a very brief, persuasive and dynamic way so as to interest and intrigue potential customers and/or investors so that they want to either invest in your business or buy from you.

Book Keeping and Tax 
An interactive session covering book keeping and Tax.  Representatives from Grant Thornton deliver this session when available.

Interactive information session on how to use the library and internet for your research.

IT
Computer help from basics to websites.

CV
What to put into an up-to-date CV.

Coaching
This session is aimed at preparing you to effectively receive and benefit from business coaching and mentoring support.  It describes the purpose and role of the business coach/mentor and your responsibilities as a client in their potentially powerful relationship.

Business Plan sessions
There are several of these sessions throughout the timetable - the time is planned in to help clients to develop their business plans and have one-to-one sessions with any of the Breathing Space Business Advisors to discuss any aspect of their particular business idea.
